Counselling - What you need to know...

About Amelia Schwartz...

Why I chose to be a counsellor

I have always had the desire to help people become the best version of themselves. Counselling was the natural route I followed as I started studying when it ticked all the boxes I wanted in my profession. With counselling I can walk a healing journey with my client and help them through a difficult time in their life. My goal is to make their life just that little bit easier by being an ear that really listens openly and without judgement. I believe that my client knows what is best for them and I assist them in discovering this knowledge with them. Each person has the capacity and capabilities to ensure they become who they are meant to be. Life will always provide us with challenges, and often we need some assistance to make it through these. That is where counselling can benefit anyone facing a challenging period or situation.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor of Social Sciences, Major: Psychological Counselling - University of South Africa June 2015 – June 2018

Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours, Major: Psychology (BPsych-Equivalent Programme) - South African Collage of Applied Psychology January 2019 – August 2020

I completed a volunteer rotation on the Phelophepha Health Train, Psychology unit, providing counselling and presenting workshops to the Swellendam community.

I have collaborated with NGO's to provide the communities with workshops and support for gender based violence programs, focusing on healing after trauma, for when we heal the individual we heal the family. And when a family is healed the community can start healing.

I have worked with a various range of people and areas of difficulties over the past 2 years. Working for a non profit where the focus was on trauma and victims of abuse. I have completed contract work with the Western Cape Department of Health, working across a range of government clinics, providing counselling services to the community.

I work with children, adolescents, adults and seniors facing challenges that effect their emotional well-being. I work with individuals, couples and families from within a Positive Counselling framework, with a Person Centered approach. This means that each session is developed around the specific person and their problems. I make use of Cognitive Behavioral, Narrative, and Mindfulness techniques to assist my clients in reaching their best self.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM COUNSELLING?

How will the session play out?
A session is 50-60 minutes long. The first session will start with a discussion of the confidentiality of the space and what can be expected from the counselling journey. We will start a conversation and your goals for the counselling will be set out and the number of session will be agreed upon.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions will depend on the reasons for counselling. They usually run in sections of 1-4 sessions, 1-6 sessions or 1-12 sessions. The counselling journey will end when you have reached your counselling goals, or when it is felt that you are no longer gaining from the sessions.
